Converse Shoes & Sneakers: An American TraditionAlmost every American alive is familiar with the Converse name. Though the company had meager beginnings, today's Converse brand is worn by professional athletes and shoe lovers across the globe and the Converse name has gained worldwide recognition.
The history of the Converse shoe brand dates back to 1908 when a Mr. Marquis M. Converse opened his own shoe company after working as a manager for a United States footwear manufacturer. He named his company the Converse Rubber Shoe Company and began the business of manufacturing winterized shoes with rubber soles for American families.
In 1915, approximately seven years after the Converse Rubber Shoe Company opened, the company manufactured its very first tennis shoe. Then, in 1917, Converse created the shoe that would be the sole reason for the brand's explosive growth – the Converse All Star.
While the first Converse All Stars were created to be performance basketball shoes, their popularity didn't really take off until 1923 when Chuck Taylor, a basketball player for the Akron Firestones, made suggestions for improving the shoe. When Converse made the redesigns based on Chuck Taylor's suggestions, the brand also put Chuck's name on the shoe's patch, and that is how the Converse All Stars we know and love officially came to be.
Over the years, Converse All Stars have come in a variety of patterns and colors and people from all walks of live have had at least one pair of Converse All Stars in their closet. From hot pink to basic black, Converse makes an All Star to fit every wardrobe.
Nowadays Converse is famous for far more than just its historical All Stars. The Converse John Varvatos, Jack Purcells and other Converse models are all extremely popular among various segments of the footwear market.
By offering comfortable shoes that feel as good as they look, Converse has stolen the hearts of consumers across the country. Whether you're in the farmlands of Wisconsin or the concrete jungle of New York, you're likely to find a pair of Converse shoes in almost every home in every city, village and town.
Unlike many of the highly-coveted sports footwear products on the market, Converse shoes aren't just well made, they are also relatively affordable. Some Converse All Stars cost less than $50 and the more-expensive styles don't exceed much more than $100 a pair. The children's Converse shoes can be even more affordable with some children's styles costing little more than $20.
