Puma: The Footwear of ChampionsEverybody understands that the Puma brand is home to some of the world's best athletic shoes, but how Puma acheived this reputation isn't as widely known. The company behind world-famous Puma shoes has been in existence since the mid 1920s, but the success of this company didn't really take off until 1936.
In 1936, Gebrüder Dassler Schuhfabrik (the company that would later become known as PUMA Schuhfabrik Rudolf Dassler in 1948) was producing an athletic shoe called the Dassler. When Jessie Owens was competing in the Olympics that year, he wore Dassler shoes and took home four gold medals. That year, almost every single football player on the German team also wore Dassler shoes. In total, they took home seven gold medals and five bronze. And so the reputation of the Puma brand was born.
In 1948, when PUMA Schuhfabrik Rudolf Dassler was founded, the very first Puma football shoe was created -- the Puma Atom. Then, 1949, Rudolf Dassler decided that football shoes should have removeable studs and he began working on his new invention. After working on designs and enlisting the help of professional football coaches, the Puma Super Atom was released in 1952, once again putting Puma at the forefront of the professional athletic footwear industry.
The 1960s proved to be another pivitol point in establishing the Puma shoe brand. It was during this decade that Armin Hary won the Olympic 100m sprint wearing Puma shoes, Pele became a World Cup winner in Puma shoes, Ethiopia and Great Britian Olympians became gold medalists wearing Puma shoes and the top scorer of the World Cup in England was wearing Puma King football shoes. Jim Hines, the first man to ever complete the Olympic 100m sprint in less than 10 minutes also did so wearing Puma shoes. Decades came and went and one thing remained the same -- where gold medalists were to be found, a pair of Puma shoes were somewhere nearby.
Over the years, Puma began to cater to more sports and added more shoes into their line. Nowadays you can get Puma athletic shoes for running, baseball, football and even cricket. Just last year, Puma introduced its golf line, broadening their athletic horizons even further. The price range of Puma shoes really does run the gambit, with both women's and men's Puma shoes starting at a price point of about $45 and going up to more than $200. Children's Puma shoes average between $45 and $75 per pair.
